Four centuries of parchin kari
Parchin kari — pietra dura — is the art of cutting semi-precious stone into petals, leaves and vines, then setting them flush into marble by hand. Malachite, lapis lazuli, carnelian and mother of pearl are shaped against a bow drill, fitted into a chiselled recess and polished until the seam disappears. It is the same technique the Mughal ateliers used on the Taj Mahal, and it is still done the same way in our Agra workshop.
